A system to map the risk of infection by Puccinia kuehnii in Brazil Agronomy
Sumida, Ciro Hideki; Fantin, Lucas Henrique; Gonçalves, Ricardo Marcelo; Canteri, Marcelo Giovanetti; Araujo, Kelly Lana; Giglioti, Éder Antônio.
Orange rust caused by the fungus Puccinia kuehnii greatly affects sugarcane and causes millions of tons of losses in production. This condition was first reported in Brazil at the end of 2009. The disease is currently present in most of the countries that produce this crop. The aim of this research was to develop risk maps of P. kuehnii infection using temperature and relative humidity data, provided by 389 automatic weather stations throughout the country. A spatial distribution analysis was carried out to assess the number of daily hours of favorable conditions for spore germination in each region. In the central-south region, where the main sugarcane producing states are concentrated, two distinct periods were observed during the three years studied....

Data transformation: an underestimated tool by inappropriate use Agronomy
Ribeiro-Oliveira, João Paulo; Santana, Denise Garcia de; Pereira, Vanderley José; Santos, Carlos Machado dos.
There are researchers who do not recommend data transformation arguing it causes problems in inferences and mischaracterises data sets, which can hinder interpretation. There are other researchers who consider data transformation necessary to meet the assumptions of parametric models. Perhaps the largest group of researchers who make use of data transformation are concerned with experimental accuracy, which provokes the misuse of this tool. Considering this, our paper offer a study about the most frequent situations related to data transformation and how this tool can impact ANOVA assumptions and experimental accuracy. Our database was obtained from measurements of seed physiology and seed technology. The coefficient of variation cannot be used as an...

Genetic control of partial resistance to Asian soybean rust doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v36i1.16919 Agronomy
Martins, Juliana Araújo Santos; Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Triângulo Mineiro; Juliatti, Fernando Cezar; Universidade Federal de Uberlandia.
The genetic control of rust resistance was studied using the Caiapônia x IAC-100 and Luziânia x Potenza crosses. The F2 and F3 generations were evaluated. Rust severity was quantified through visual assessment of the middle third of three leaflets per plant and performed by three different evaluators; the average score was calculated foreach individual plant. From these data, we estimated the mean and variance of the genetic components by employing the weighted least squares method. The estimated number of genes and broad- and narrow-sense heritabilities were also obtained. It was concluded that rust resistance is a characteristic controlled by 2 to 23 genes that are predominantly dominant. The estimate of narrow-sense heritability was greater than 70% for...

The objective of this work was to study and model the drying process of corn ears at different air temperatures. Thermodynamic properties associated with the drying process of this product were also determined. Corn ears with initial moisture content of 0.45 dry basis (kgw kgdm-1) were dried until they reached a final moisture content of 0.12 (kgw kgdm-1) at temperatures of 45, 55 and 65°C. Traditional models used to describe the drying process of several agricultural products were employed to fit the observed data of the drying process of corn ears. The effective diffusion coefficient (Def) was determined by means of an analytical solution of Fick’s second law. It was concluded that the Logarithmic model was the one that best fit the observed data...

Methods to determine forage intake by lambs on Italian ryegrass Animal Sciences
Rosa, Aline Tatiane Nunes da; Rocha, Marta Gomes da; Pötter, Luciana; Graminho, Larissa Arnhold; Bergoli, Tuani Lopes; Moterle, Paulo Henrique.
This study was conducted to evaluate the use of chromium oxide and the content of fecal nitrogen to estimate forage intake by female lambs on Italian ryegrass pasture. The pasture was managed under different forage allowances (FA): 6, 9 and 12% BW. The experiment was a randomized split-split plot design, in which the forage allowances were considered as main plots, the phenological stages as subplots and methods to determine intake as sub-subplots. Forage intake, in the ryegrass vegetative stage, is independent of forage allowance. Lower allowances limit forage intake from the pre-flowering stage, while at the reproductive stage, intake was lower in FA6, intermediate in FA9 and higher in FA12. The estimation of organic matter intake by lambs on Italian...
